The Best Plant-Based Protein Powders

I love protein powder. I’m just going to come right out and say it.

It makes everything better, and has become a daily staple over at Full On Happiness headquarters. When I officially {without even really realizing it} switched to a smoothie for breakfast every morning, I became a protein powder junkie. I bounce between chocolate and vanilla and usually buy based on what’s on sale at Sprouts, so a lot of brands have passed through my kitchen. Are you ready for my faves? All my clients get my list of Food Staples and this is the protein powder section, in case they want to adopt the nourishing morning ritual of a smoothie for breakfast.

My rule of thumb: stick to protein sources from pea, flax seed, cranberry seed, chia seed, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, and hemp seed protein based ones or other grain-based proteins like brown rice protein, quinoa, amaranth, millet, or buckwheat protein. Steer clear of whey and soy isolate proteins as they’ve been shown to negatively impact digestion.

The vanilla is delicious. Not too chalky. It’s the perfect subtle vanilla. In fact, I once made these protein bars using this brand.  They use yellow pea protein where you get all of the essential amino acids. Plus hemp seeds for another source of complete protein in addition to coconut for essential fatty acids and goji berries for added antioxidants.


If I put my branding hat on, Vega does a good job. They really create a lifestyle feel and seem to own lots of shelf space! Fun fact: it’s a Canadian brand. The vanilla is very sweet, so if that’s your thing, you’ll love it. Opt for the one with greens {in my opinion} because why not sneak in a few more!? This one has pea protein, brown rice protein, hemp protein, and savi seed protein. The greens powder blend contains alfalfa, spinach, broccoli, and kale. Yum!

MRM Veggie Protein

Currently obsessed with this one! The vanilla is delicious. Not too sweet and subtly resembles a cake batter flavor. Yes, please! The veggie protein is a blend of pea, brown rice, and hemp protein. Plus you get your healthy fat omegas with flax seed powder and chia seed powder. And there’s digestive enzyme support! Plus there’s an antioxidant blend of grapes, blueberries, cherries, bilberries, broccoli, spinach. Such a fan.


Plant Fusion

This one has such a light, delicious flavor. The chocolate is great. The protein is a mix of pea, artichoke, amaranth, and quinoa. Plus some helpful digestive enzymes. Simple, no frills, and delicious.

Garden of Life – Organic Plant Protein {Grain-free} or Raw Protein

I prefer the plant protein to the raw.  The raw is a bit chalky, but some people like that texture, and if raw is something you need to stick to it’s a good fit. The plant protein smooth vanilla is really good. Slightly artificial tasting, but still good. The protein blend is pea, flax, cranberry, baobab, moringa, chia, and pumpkin seeds. It also includes a great digestive enzyme roundup, and one of my favorites about this one is it includes probiotics to support the gut.


Manitoba Harvest Hemp Protein

To be completely honest, I don’t recall tasting this one, so I can’t report back on the flavor, but the ingredients get my stamp of approval. Ingredients are simple… hemp protein which comes along with your Omega 3-6-9 combo. Hemp protein is high in fiber and is known to be easy to digest and also contains essential fatty acids. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Amazing Grass

The Vanilla Chai is good, especially if you’re a chai spice fan. This one has a blend of brown rice, hemp, pumpkin seed, and quinoa protein plus a greens and antioxidant blend. On top of that there’s a digestive enzyme and probiotic blend. They really have it all! This company makes a ton of products… I’ve been wanting to try their greens powder too.

Whole Foods Brand 

I tried the Vanilla Cinnamon flavor, and if I’m being honest, I wish it was better. I’d like to give another flavor a shot because the ingredients are great. It contains plant protein {like all of the above}, omega-3 EFAs {from flax and chia seeds}, antioxidants, probiotics, digestive enzymes and greens plus maca root powder.

Hands down my favorite protein powder. The best is the Medi-Clear in vanilla {it’s new!} and chocolate. They both taste like cake in the best way possible and the vitamin and mineral count in both are amazing. The base is a pea and rice protein and the SGS component is an antioxidant blend that supports Phase II liver detox. So good!

Another great professional line with all sorts of amazing supplements. My favorite is the pure pea protein. So tasty and delicious. It’s incredibly pure and clean.
